SHORT FILM:
It was after twenty-three years of estrangement... the night my father died. I was sitting and praying next to him in his bed. He woke up, looked over at me, sat up, and looked toward the ceiling with wonder in his eyes. He looked at me again and said, “Isn’t it beautiful?” Looking back up at the ceiling, he slowly laid down, closing his eyes.
Later that night, my dad left this planet for The Beautiful.

The boxes under the Christmas tree when you're a kid - "To James From Santa"; the box of soccer gear your mom hauls to your game; the boxes your dad puts in the trunk of your cheap car when you leave for college; the tiny box you present your girlfriend when you propose; the dozens of boxes to unpack in your 1st home; the box of diapers when your daughter is born; the tiny box containing car keys you give your daughter when she turns 16; the boxes you haul into her dorm room;

the box containing a high end espresso machine you give her as a wedding present; the box she gives you revealing the sex of the baby she's carrying; the box with hearing aids in it you just bought; the box for father's day she sent you from Italy where she and her husband live; the box of sympathy cards on the table next to the casket that holds your bride of 52 years; the boxes your daughter unpacks for you at the assisted living place you just moved into;

the boxes of birthday presents for your granddaughters 16th birthday; a small box your daughter gives you for Christmas at their home (you’re very hard-of-hearing, you wear very thick glasses, and she has to wake you up from sleeping in the chair by the Christmas tree); ...ending with the box of your ashes your daughter and granddaughter release in the ocean. Your daughter smiles at your granddaughter as she rubs her pregnant belly, saying, "Little James, I hope you become the man he was."
